When the 30-minute tour ends I buy another copy of “The Old Man and the Sea” in the gift shop, which I always seem to do, and a postcard that shows a grinning Hemmingway posing with a dead marlin. The site where the pool is located was formerly the setting of Hemingway’s famous boxing ring, where he would spar with local amateur boxers such as Shine Forbes. Construction of the pool necessitated relocation of the boxing ring to the site now occupied by the Blue Heaven Restaurant on Petronia Street, a few blocks away. One of the more stunning and unusual features of the Hemingway Home property is the in-ground swimming pool, an extraordinary luxury for a residential home in 1930s Key West. Even more mind-boggling is the sheer labor of digging, in solid coral, a massive hole 24 feet wide, 60 feet long, 10 feet deep at the south end, and 5 feet deep at the north end.

Pfeiffer found a house for sale at auction, and her uncle purchased it for $8,000 (approximately $134,00 today) as a belated wedding gift. Prior to coming to this house, Hemingway was living in Key West for 3 years in other rented houses. Gus, uncle of Pauline and second wife of Hemingway bought the house for his niece and her husband, paying $8,000 in 1931 as cash. He presented the house to them as their wedding gift, when they got married. The property layout includes several outbuildings that serve as functional extensions of the main house.

The swimming pool, built in 1938 as a present from Pfeiffer to her husband, was the first residential swimming pool built in Key West. The coach house became a pool house, and Hemingway had walls built around the grounds. He also installed a catwalk that allowed him to walk from the bedroom to his studio in the pool house.
It remained vacant for the next 10 years, until Hemingway’s death, after which his heirs sold it. The new owners, who had planned to live in the house, found that most of the furnishings and other memorabilia remained there, and they opened it as a museum in 1964. The Ernest Hemingway House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1958. It is packed with Hemingway memorabilia—his typewriter, photos, and animal skins.
